Innovative Enterprising (Terrible Lackeys) Day

how many people visited the school. and how many people visited the subject booths. and how many students felt used. and how many hours of curriculum time went to waste. Tell Me.

I hate Acronyms. Get this one. IETL. they even give us names. i'm the Innovation Representative of the Literature Unit! wow what a mouthful. do i look innovative. Tell Me.

i tell you which pple innovate. the students who, even though you see them only Twice in Three Weeks for a total of 1hr and 45 useful minutes, come up with a play in rhyming couplets, practice everything in their own time and pull off a grand show on the day itself. Students who bake up a storm and work and present and smile and feed visitors and *gasp* the Guest of Honour till they're blue in the face. Students who create a massive project without much teacher interference/input and pull it off, even though they have a withdrawal form in their pocket. Students who enthusiastically share insights that they've learnt with disinterested passerbys.

of course the irony of it all is that most of these mentioned aren't going to stay. what a blooming waste of time, talent, and money. THANK YOU.

attended a first aid course on saturday from EIGHT AM to Friggin THREE PM. it was good.. ... i just dread the fact that it's going to be another 3 weeks of this and a test. then i'm a certified first aider. anyone need a saviour?

at the end of the course on saturday, a colleague and i were talking about how there are students, and there are StuDents.

students are the regular, run of the mill types that can be found in all Institutes of Learning - some of them are lightning fast. some of them are not so fast, but at least they try their darnest and the concentration in their eyes shows up when you see their results. you have run of the mill students in most schools - its just a matter of how big a proportion of the cohort they make up.

StuDents are different - these are youth that you can never ever reach even though you might explain something a million times in as clear a way as you possibly can, integrating as many of the multiple learning intelligences that you know into your lesson, and you might be a fanastic coach/teacher.

StuDents are different in that they lack some qualities: Self-Possession, Self-Esteem, Drive, and (sufficiently integrated) Life Experience. These are not the ones who stare at you with glazed eyes and go off into dreamland at the start of your well-planned lesson - GlazedEyes can be brilliant or run of the mill - GlazedEyes may be so advanced in thinking that he's Yonks Further Evolved than you and he's tapping into some hitherto untapped source of High Knowledge. Do Not Underestimate the Power and Potential of Student GlazedEyes.

Back to StuDents. They are the ones who look at you with rapt attention and whose face speaks volumes about how they're really into and absorbing the lesson. They're more often than not the obedient, quiet, alwayshandinginhomeworkontime types. Of course the reality hits us too late - only when they're asked to perform a simple experiment you've repeated 15 times over, or to repeat what 15 of their other classmates have done 15 times before correctly in exactly the same manner - then we realise the truth. They Can't Do It. and the truth is shocking because you never thought that there were people who couldn't learn and wouldn't learn and thought that was all fine. StuDents need a teacher with infinite patience and infinite mercy and infinite godliness. and a great majority of these StuDents aren't going to fare so well at the Interview. aren't going to the big U aren't going to work at cushy well-paid white collar jobs. so. you kind of wonder: Why are they Here?

After a while, you don't know whether to laugh or to cry or to bitch anymore. it's amazing what insights a first aid course on a saturday can bring.
